Making Memories Out of Memories is a project that supports seniors with memory loss in recalling and cherishing their past experiences. It all began with my grandparents' travelogue of their trip through Scandinavia in 1999. Using technology such as Google Streetview, I virtually revisited the places they explored. This digital journey helped them reconnect with their memories and even sparked new ones, right from the comfort of their home.
The project contains a video and a series of images under the name "Making Memories Out of Memories," where I added my own photos to their travel stories. This filled in the gaps where photos were missing, bringing their experiences from that moment back to life.
This project demonstrates how art and technology can help older adults reconnect with their past and enjoy new experiences, even if they can no longer travel as they once did. It's a way to celebrate their lives and keep their memories alive in a meaningful way.
Making Memories Out Of Memories has been exhibited at GLUE festival in Amsterdam in 2021, at the Dutch Design Week in 2022, and at Rotterdam Photo Festival as part of the Rotterdam Art Week in 2023.
