’It was like being in a nature movie’
How will we travel in the future? And how can we, the younger generation, use our technical knowledge for the elderly?
Travel for the eldery
We live in a time where you no longer need to physically visit a place to travel. Travelling can also be done digitally. Almost every place in the world can be found in the digital world. This world is endless, which gives us an escape. We can use this in our advantage when we aren’t able to cross the borders.
How can we travel in the future? Experience the feeling of 'being away'?
In order to discover this, I started reliving an existing memory myself. Namely a travel story of my grandparents from 1999. What did they see? What memories have they made?
‘You had those piles of stones there, trolls according to legend. You shouldn’t touch them, it brings bad luck.’
’Everywhere there are sweet, little flowers growing on the rocks.’
Digital journey
Based on this photo album with the written stories and photos, I looked up those same places on Google Streetview.
What did they see back then? What memories did they make back then? What does the place look like now, has anything changed?
By digitally reliving these memories, they are cherished and immortalised. Emotions and feelings are evoked without having to be physically present at the place. The travel story spreads in the here and now.
New memories
During this journey, I also created my own memories. I also found out that some images were missing in the story, which I let my own imagination run over. Through the memories I created, I formed an image of what it might look like in my head.
These images were made at my grandparents' home. To reflect the current situation in our society: sitting at home and not being able to leave. Later on, these images were manipulated with mixed media, to show the fluidity of the digital world and the now. To give something back from the now to the then.
With this, something is given back to the existing memory, and the travel story ends at the beginning again: with the travellers of the story itself.
‘We had a lot of fun during breakfast, there are some entertainers in our group’
